PRACTICE: Writing 6 – Informal letters

I’m thinking about coming to live in your town for a while and learn your language! What kind of accommodation would I be able to get? And you know how keen I am on sport – any chance of learning a new one while I’m there? The problem is, I’ll need to get a part-time job to pay for it all – is that going to be easy?

Let me know – it would be great if you could do it all!

I remember that you worked in a ski resort last winter, and I’m thinking of doing the same this year. Were there any drawbacks? Did you meet interesting people? What opportunities were there for skiing? Would I gain much from doing it for just four months? Should I apply for it?

Guess what? I’ve passed all my exams with top grades! As you know, I didn’t expect to do so well, so instead of enrolling at university, I decided to backpack round the world next year. Now my family are urging me to rethink and go to uni after all. I’d really like your advice please. What are the pros and cons of each, and which should I choose? Or maybe you think it’s possible to do both?

You recently took part in an activity which you enjoyed very much. A friend of yours has written to you expressing an interest in the activity and asking how it went.

Write a letter telling your friend about the positive and negative aspects of your experience, encouraging him/her to take part in a similar event.

Read part of an email from a friend who is planning to come and visit your country.

Of course, I’d really like to see as much as I can, but with so little time (only a week) I wonder if that’s feasible. Do you have any suggestions on where to go and what to do in your country?

Before I come to visit you this summer, I’d like to learn some of your language. What advice could you give me about how best to learn a language? What do you think I’ll find most difficult about learning your language? What do you think are the most important things for me to focus on?

This is part of an email you have received from Tom, who was a member of a youth group you led two years ago. Write back to Tom outlining the advantages of further education, comparing this with the option of going straight into work, and advising Tom on what you think is the best choice.

I’ll be nineteen this summer, so I have to decide whether to go straight into work or to opt for higher education. I haven’t decided what I want to do as a career yet. At the moment, earning a salary seems the most attractive choice; if I were to continue studying, I don’t know how I’d finance it! I’d really appreciate your advice.
