PRACTICE: Writing 8 – Report

You have just finished a short period of work in a company abroad as part of your business course. You have now been asked to write a report for your course organiser.
In your report you should explain what you did and how you benefited from the period of work, describe any problems you had and make recommendations for others students on the business course who will be working in the same company abroad later.

An international research group is carrying out an investigation into the housing situation for young people around the world. You have been asked by the group to write a report about your country, including the following points:
· The different housing options available in your country for young people in their early 20s
· The problems faced by young people with each option
· Possible future changes in the housing situation for young people in your country

You are on the student committee at your college. This year you helped the English Department organise a three-week study trip to the UK. The principal of the college has asked you to write a report on the trip.
You should explain what was successful about the trip, describe any problems, and suggest improvements for future trips.

MODEL ANSWER
You have been studying in an English-speaking country for some time as part of an educational exchange. The director of the exchange programme is interested in improving the experience for future students. He has asked you to write a report outlining why you have been doing the exchange, describing what you like and dislike about it and making recommendations for how it could be improved.

Your local council is conducting an enquiry into the volume of visitors to the centre of your town or city with a view to encouraging more people to make greater use of shops, restaurants, cafés and entertainment facilities there. You agree to write a report describing the existing situation, including factors which discourage people from coming to the city centre and recommending ways of attracting more visitors.
